Barkbox Review - September 2013

I'm very excited to say that my inagural post will be about Barkbox!

Barkbox is a monthly subscription box for dogs. The cost per month depends on the subscription length - the longer the subscription, the better the value. I opted for the 6-month subscription which comes out to $19 per box. This is my second Barkbox (my pup Macho loved the first one) and I think he is slowly catching on to the excitement of receiving packages in the mail. Before I even had a chance to open this month's box the furball was all over it, nub-wagging and drooling. I cut the tape and let him unbox the rest, and in no time he was running around with the goodies he stole.

September's Barkbox

Macho discovering this month's goodies

Superior Farms Venison Ear
The only venison Macho's tried before was in his dog food and he didn't care for it much, so I was surprised that this was the first thing he took from the box, plastic-wrapped and all. It was a chore just getting him to let go of it so I could cut off the wrapping. I guess deer chews are definitely on his list of favorites.

Barkworthies Angus Beef Tendon
I already knew before even giving it to the furball that he would go nuts over this one. And just as I guessed, he loved it. Bully sticks, rawhide - anything beef, actually - wins the Macho seal of approval.

Etta Says! Venison Chew
Haven't gotten around to giving this one to the pup yet, but if the venison ear was any indication, I'm sure he'll gobble this one up with no problem.

Wagatha's Organic Dog Biscuits - Tuscan Pizza
This treat smells delish, and based on the reviews I read it is widely accepted among pooches. Macho will eat almost anything, and I mean ANYTHING (including cardboard and anything moving, such as bugs and fur blown by the wind) so I was shocked when he spit this one out. He always tries to steal my real pizza. What gives? Maybe he knows the difference. Or maybe he's just been spoiled by all the human-worthy treats he's been getting lately (his latest fav is one that tastes JUST LIKE Teddy Grahams. No joke. And yes, I really did try one to see what he was making such a big deal about). Either way, I probably won't be getting him anymore of this one.

VetraCare Pet Liquid Bandage
I'm guessing this is the pet version of the liquid bandage for people. Probably for cracked paw pads? So far we've been lucky and Macho hasn't suffered anything of the like, but it's good to know that I'll be prepared if it ever happens.

Our Pet's IQ Treat Ball
Saving the best for last! First I must mention that Macho has an endless supply of energy and if he gets bored he will make up his own fun, usually in the form of chewing. Carpet, cardboard, hair, you name it, he will chew it. As much as I hate to admit it, the furball is also pretty smart. Before he was housebroken, whenever he had an accident he'd use his bed to wipe up the pee or cover the poo so I wouldn't notice (but of course, his guilty look always gave him away). Therefore, mentally stimulating toys are the perfect solution. He loves figuring out how to get treats out of tight spaces. That being said, the IQ ball is by far my favorite item in this month's Barkbox. The two halves screw together (treats go in the lower half), and within the ball is an adjustable opening to make getting treats out more challenging. Macho loves this toy and it keeps him out of trouble for a little while, although he did figure out a way to unscrew the top off the ball and dump the treats out, that clever animal. What the heck, he doesn't even have thumbs!!

We really enjoyed this month's Barkbox. I love the variety of treats/toys/necessities we've been getting. Kinda bummed that the furball doesn't really dig the pizza treats, but I'll keep giving them to him anyway. He seems to be getting more and more accepting of them; maybe it's an acquired taste? But he absolutely loves everything else he's gotten this month. Definitely looking forward to the next one!

If you're interested in subscribing to Barkbox, use my link to get $5 off your first subscription and Barkbox will also give Macho a free month. It's a win-win situation!
Ohmigosh Mom, can I pleeease dig in to my box? Like, NOW??
